Okay, so obviously, youve had a really big year. Its day 10 since my purchase on Misrule, Im on page 66 and I am calling it a day. I read the first book enjoying being in the head of a character, and now, the character has completely changed and is doing frustrating things and even though, narratively that's interesting and probably going to be solved in the finale - it simply makes *reading the story* an unpleasant experience. This one is a little bit more historical. Feared and despised for the sinister power in her veins, Alyce wreaks her revenge on the kingdom that made her an outcast. Even her intense hate for Derek, the human who washed up on Briars shores who won some of Auroras friendship, grew annoying and it bothered me how it felt like the story was trying to set up a love triangle or force Alyce to hate someone who wasnt as bad as she made him out to be, making it feel annoyingly petty. If not that, then will Alyce's revenge open Aurora's eyes and turn them against Alyce? So theres obviously Alices this villa magic was really, you know, she kind of doesnt realize and taps into when we discover and we kind of go with her on that journey. And so she sent it to me. It was just very interesting to sort of take that journey and kind of knowing that they cant be that perfect. Perhaps it is because shes surrounded by stories that she began writing them. Luckily a few of the members of my book club wanted to read this so we did a buddy read, although I was a month behind them both! So moral grayness, like, amplified by 500 times for Jasmine Throne. But theyre just coming off a time when they were like heavily celebrated had this like alliance with humans. And so I kind of circled back to my initial love of the story and the character. I do think that Anne Boleyn was a very early feminist as much as one could have been a feminist in the 1300s. One of the best reads of the year. Really, though, this is the story of two groups who have seemed to have been at odds with each other practically since the beginning of time. This is where I wanted to throw things: Walters character journey for Alyce and Aurora is so hard to read, because anyone whos been through a messed up relationship can see their mistakes. The creatures of the blighted Malterre have come streaming into Briar now that the humans have fallen in order to create a home where they feel welcome. Heather Walter. Now she lies sleeping endlessly under a terrible curse that cannot be lifted even by powerful Alyce, who become the utterly wicked villain everyone imagined her to be to save her beloved. So I liked that idea. There was a lot of filler and unnecessary subplots, those extra pages could have been better used at the end of the book. And so I remember I was just like, Okay, Im gonna do it, Im just gonna jump in, and Im gonna do it, and Im gonna have like, its gonna be fine. And so villains a lot of times subvert the normal way to do things, if you will. Like Im very much looking forward to that. After reading I feel, hell, these characters are awful to each other and seemingly without, well, reason it's just turned unpleasant to read about. And if you have a paperback of Malice, you can actually read the prologue. But theyre still considered these good people. Would I return? And I think that kind of just goes to what you were saying about how I think I always say that, like, I wish this space like existed when I was younger, when I was teenager, obviously, I was talking about these books and talking about authors and loving these worlds that it was just crazy to me to think that other people didnt know they existed. Because like there is nothing left. But could Aurora ever love the villain Alyce has become? This is when of course, like the first time that you create your account, like the algorithm doesnt know anything about you. Like, yeah, like, all right, we cant lie. Council meetings and ceremonies and special occasions. Still, the many twists and dark moral questions keep the pages flying. I was just like, Im finding my book when the first time. Malice. And the main treatment is just like stretching, stretch all the time. I think that makes all the difference. I liked how the events followed and especially enjoyed how what happened in Misrule followed from Malice and the worlds own history. The Dark Grace is dead. I have simply begun to not like the main characters. Obviously, they fought this war, like, which is not good. The first was depressing and angsty - the main character was flawed and a abused and broken - but there was some HOPE to it. Feared and despised for the sinister power in her veins, Alyce wreaks her revenge on the kingdom that made her an outcast. B&N: That is perfect. I think what she wanted was she had ideas of her own, and she wanted to implement them. Vila courts didnt do that to their own.Sounds boring. An Imp yawns.The other nudges closer. Births and deaths. Its just this like, again, a dichotomy that we have, even with, like historical women where theyre either Madonnas or theyre these temptresses. B&N: Yeah, so was there something that drew you to that more historical where youre like, Okay, to your point, Ive done this, this gilded Versailles world, and now I want to draw more or like, you know, retelling in a way and now Im going to move more historical. And we end the episode with TBR Topoff book recommendations from Margie and Marc. Look at how he pursued her. And like the secret dark parts of our heart. They have the Court of Dreams on their toes. As the Dark Court swelled, they sought revenge on the Fae for having sought to destroy them in the first place, decimating Fae court after Fae court until only the Fae Kings court remains. Or is true love only for fairy tales? Unexpectedly, a human washes up on Briars shores and the young man chooses to serve Nimara, but there are other forces out there and he inadvertently wakes Aurora, surprising the Dark Court and upending plans even as Alyce tries to win Aurora all over again while fighting the Fae. Were both just a couple of villains like we know each other because we have the same agent and so like were always just like. And Im sort of like living in this world in between my actual reality, but to have a place where you can go and express these feelings and then really just interact with authors like you and just have that connection. Theyre just so intriguing. And so like, all kinds of stuff happened. Misrule. This isnt a storybook, I tell them, tapping a corner of the page.
